Snowed In

I've been snowed in!! (Okay, I'm an indoor cat, but you know what I mean...my humans have been snowed in--and thus snowed AWAY from PetSmart!! Fortunately, we have extra food. When my humans go shopping for me and are sliding across boxes of food at the cash register, the clerks ALWAYS ask, "How many cats do you have?" For some reason they always say, "One very needy cat." What does that mean?)

The snow's been pretty exciting because we have lots of bird feeders and I can see the birds better against the snow. We've been through over FOUR pounds of finch thistle food already!

But on to more important concerns: have you seen the latest Simon's cat video? Simon's cat experiences snow for the first time!

I got to watch the Cats movie yesterday and I thought it was purr-tastic.

In my continuing efforts to lobby for more cat-related television, I've noticed CNN has a nice section on their web site about pets.
Did you realize there are more pets than there are humans in the United States?

In one article, CNN notes that $36.3 billion was spent on the fur-enabled. As if that's a large sum, considering that estimate takes into account food, supplies, v-e-t visits, medicines, toys, services, and more. Imagine how much money is spent on the 300 million humans in the U.S.

Another human is quoted as saying, "Thirty years ago in the U.S., the average age of a dog was 4 years; the average age of a cat was 3 years."

This May, I'll be six. What are you planning to buy me for my birthday? I'm thinking $36.3 million would be a good start. I'll take one of everything from the cats section of Doctors Foster and Smith.

Odd-Eyed Model

I like perusing cat products available in pet supply catalogs.

I like the Doctors Foster & Smith catalog because the photographs often feature action shots of cats providing product demonstrations. In some of its cat catalogs, Doctors Foster & Smith provides the name of the cat, which is a charming feature. I noticed in one photo an odd-eyed Turkish Angora named Sasha, who is a 14 pounder. Beautiful, no?

I think they should provide more of their cat models' names. And, I for one, would be interested in following the career of Sasha.

Don't you think I'd make a nice product model?

I could certainly demonstrate just how sleepy I get on high quality pillows.

It's Not an Ode

The Primary Human wrote a haiku for me.

Spring
silky, long, white fur

Hm. That's not an ode.

I find it interesting that the Primary Human entitled the poem "spring," and yet the season word (traditional haikus, you may be aware, generally evoke a sense of the time of year) she used was "snow," and, perhaps, "white," both of which woud be indicative of winter. Further, is this poem humorous? If so, it may be a hokku (which, more frequently has a humorous intonation).

Got to go. The Nose-Wiping Kitty Carrier Incarcerator is making crab omelets and I must supervise. Else, he might forget to feed me.

Kitten TV, Part II

Following up on my interest in more cat-related television, I saw one of my favorite television cats. My humans have been watching Star Trek: Next Generation re-runs on G4 and tonight's episode featured a very fine cat, indeed: Spot.

Once again, I think wikipedia has a very fine write-up, indeed, on Spot. I'm glad I don't have any Klingon catsitters. I prefer feline supplement bagel.

I find it interesting that Star Trek has its own wiki. And better yet, there's a Spot article. I had forgotten Spot had turned into an iguana at one point. I'm glad I have never turned into an iguana. And, recall that Spot saved the Enterprise?

Spot's gender changed from male to female during an episode in which Spot's pregnancy proved an important plot point. Or perhaps Data never understood feline gender difference previous to that point?

I do prefer for my humans to tell me that I am a good cat and a pretty cat.

I wish one of my humans would write an ode to me. If only one of my humans were a writer, or something.

I've been very busy playing with all the toys I got for Christmas (don't forget; my birthday is in May). I got a tent of my own, a stocking FULL of blue toys that match my eyes, a scratching rug, a little kitty crinkle toy.

I think it's been well-documented that I think the internet is good only for looking for kitty information.

I would be happy to watch cat-oriented TV all the time. I'd like for television producers to be aware they need to create more cat TV. Also, I like to watch infomercials - they don't have to be cat products. I like cleaning infomercials best where the demonstrators move their cleaning products around the screen. Maybe those are best if you've had a little hit or two of 'nip.

It's Not Too Late - A Friendly Fireside Chat

I'd like to take time out of my busy holiday season to remind humans it's not too late to buy their critters presents for the holidays.

Toys might remind the critters to stay *off* the trees. Treats of their own might keep critters out of the kitchen and away from all the cooking the humans seem to be doing. New beds might help critters stay out of the wrapping paper and ribbon.

Did I mention I like ribbon?

My humans received some packages recently wrapped up with this red, round ribbon that drives me wild. Last year, the Nose-Wiping, Kitty Carrier Incarcerator noticed me enjoying that same type of ribbon on one of his packages and he made me a toy with that ribbon. I can't help zipping across the floor chasing that ribbon.

That's the sort of gift-giving I appreciate.

Faithless Humans

WHERE DID MY HUMANS GO???

Humans are so unreliable. I should have been suspicious when I saw the big black things that I think make comfortable beds. But I wasn't suspicious. That's the type of cat I am.

When the Nose-Wiping, Kitty Carrier Incarcerator finally came home, I had to play with him a lot. Humans are so needy that way.

My sitters gave me plenty of treats. And they didn't make me stand up to get them like the N-WKCI does.

My humans did bring home some paper bags for me. When the humans are home, I'm snubbing the bags, though. Because I can.

I was worried that humans wouldn't be able to find their way home. When they got home, they said, "Home is where the cat is."

Maybe I'll go climb in my paper bag now.

Feline Food From Afar

"I am not sure I agree with all your tastes in food, but grass is a tasty snack upon occasion. But I would like to suggest one of my favorite treats. When my humans sit on my larger cushions in my bigroom, sometimes they have something rather buttery and I find it my responsibility to check it out and lick it off that crusty thing they put it on. On occasion they leave the main container open on my kitchen counter and I can get a lick or two directly from the source!"

Interesting. I like my cousin's tactic. She's got a good technique that I may have to investigate. Did you notice how innocent, so nonchalant she looks sitting on the dining room table?

I don't find myself liking buttery spreads, but the Kitty Carrier Incarcerator dabbed some on my nose once. I just left it on my nose, walking around so everyone could see the insult I'd endured.

The KCI once dabbed ketchup on my nose. My nose held a pink spot for weeks.

That's the same technique I utilize when they try to dab kitty laxative on my nose. Or, I'll manage to brush it off onto some furniture, one of the humans, etc.

My cardboard scratcher makes an excellent bed.

Not that the Humans haven't provided me with beds, including:
1) a fluffy green pillow on the loveseat
2) a fluffy green pillow behind the recliner in the library
3) a multi-level wicker seat (I only sleep in the enclosed area where I can hide)
4) two seat cushions on the dining room chairs
5) the seat cushion on the bench at the foot of their bed
6) the honest to goodness, catnip-enhanced kitty bed under the T.V.
7) the three locations in the closet
* under the clothes hangers, on a towel
* on the lowest shelf
* wherever the sun is shining in
8) the laundry hamper with my peach blanket

My favorite position of the day:
* the fluffy green pillow on the loveseat, my rear paws facing the back cushion, my stomach facing the corner, my fore paws pressed into the arm, my back on the pillow, my tail hanging off the pillow in the same direction as my head

The humans cooked tonight. The Primary Human pulled something out of the refrigerator and poured it into her glass. When I realized it was milk and not that nasty soy stuff, I yowled helpfully to let her know I wanted some.

Do you know how many times I had to yowl at her before I got my own little dish?

Yeesh. Apparently, I like Lactaid milk.

The N-WKCI let me sniff something I'd never sniffed before: key lime curds on crumpet. I had to smell it a long time.

P.S. Post milk, I had a crazy, tearing around the dining room and sending the rug at the bottom of the stairs askew. Maybe it's true what they say: Milk does a cat good.

mmmMmmmm....Sardines

The humans didn't have anything interesting for breakfast, and lunch didn't seem to be getting off to a promising start.

They cut up an apple and then pulled out this can of something that looked intriguing (anything with requiring a can opener has potential), but when the Nose-Wiping Kitty Carrier Incerator left me have a sniff, I was so disappointed. It looked like tuna, but it smelled like soy. They made sandwiches with the stuff, but I noticed even they scraped it back into the can.

The N-WKCI pulled out a long tin of something. He peeled open the lid and then he put a few bites down on my plate. Fish! And then he poured the liquid out of the tin. Yum! Apparently, I like sardines.

I say No to Tuno, Yes, Yes, Yes to Sardines!

I had to lick my cheeks quite a bit. And then I had to take several naps.

Semi-Flightless Yellow Rubber Water Fowl

The humans sat in my big drinking dish the other night in the watering room. I'm always quite concerned for them to be sitting there. I know, as a Turkish Angora, I'm supposed to like to swim, but, I am anxious at the edge of the big water dish - but I do find myself walking around the ledge of the big water dish often.

I was captivated by something pink, a cloth, floating on the top of the water. It looked like a little island; I felt an urge to step on it.

Then I noticed something yellow bobbing on the water's surface. It was a type of water fowl. As it floated toward the edge, I put a paw over the edge and smacked the yellow bird. It submerged, but then popped up to the surface. I knocked it a good one and yet it still floated. I tried to claw the bird, but could not get a purchase on its slick surface. I trilled angrily and jumped onto the floor; I couldn't help sulking.

One of the humans put the water fowl on the ledge. I trilled and knocked it twice for good measure and it flew through the air and then plummeted onto the floor. It had no opportunity to hide from me.

One of the humans again returned it to the ledge. I repeated my previous attack on the water fowl.

The results?

Finicky Felines

I'm not such a finicky eater. I like my Kit'n'Kaboodle with a sprinkling of Greenies on top. One time, the Primary Human didn't put the Greenies on top and I had to yowl at her until she did. I'm happy with the occasional can of food, too, particularly if I've got post-dental treatment fang discomfort.

If the humans are partaking of water-packed tuna, I'm happy to accept a teaspoon or two - but I find oil-packed tuna unacceptable. I am quite fond of helping myself to the Primary Human's tomato soup, but chicken broth will do in a pinch. I have also helped myself to the Primary Human's lettuce, corn, carrots, and peas. The humans also recently ate some pre-cooked turkey. I don't like warm meat, however.

I consider it quite rude for a human to eat without letting me have a good sniff of what it is they're partaking.

As you can see from my Interests, I like eating grass - I like foot long blades from the field. Unfortunately, the farmer mowed the grass and alfalfa the other day. (On the other hand, following a haying, the birds do fly around the fields more, which is not without interest.)

It's All in the Attitude

Last night, I endeavored to slip outside. The Nose-Wiping Kitty Carrier Incarcerator had turned to grab the shrimp off the counter, leaving the deck door somewhat ajar. As opposed to previous attempts in which I stuck my head around one of the humans' legs or ran across the room in a mad dash for the open air, I utilized an alternative methodology: I sauntered out the door as if I'd been doing so daily for the past year.

The N-WKCI, of course, caught me before my rear paws hit the wooden planks of the deck.

This was the most effective strategy yet. I had successfully lulled the humans into thinking I no longer had any interest in the Big Room. I shall return to my plotting.

Thinking Inside the Box

I came across a new box today. I had to climb inside. Why?

Bad 'Nip Trip

The humans gave me some 'nip last night while I was working over my cardboard scratcher (one that's big enough for me to sit on so I can use my weight to hold down the resisting cardboard).

Don't get me wrong. I like 'nip.

As I was giving the cardboard scratcher a vicious scratching, I noticed there was something moving just out of the corner of my eye. I whirled, trilled as terrifyingly as possible, but whatever it was moved at the exact same time I did. I caught the tip of something white. So, I threw myself to the opposite side, trilling angrily, and saw just the tip of something fluffy before my cunning opponent disappeared from sight. White and fluffy, like me. I rolled over onto my side, pressing my back against the door, but my opponent disappeared. I ran across the rug, my opponent following me, stalking me, but when I turned, it disappeared too.

The Primary Human came over and picked me up, saying, "Crash, you're having a bad 'nip trip. It's okay. It's just your tail."

As if.

She carried me up the stairs and I spent the rest of the evening staring at the walls until finally falling asleep.

I didn't see my fluffy white opponent again.

I've felt especially meowy today. I have more vocalizations than most cats and have utilized most of them today. Ppprrrtttaaaa.

My humans aren't sure what I want today.
